Director - Intensive English Program - American University of Kuwait

Under the direction of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, this Director of the Intensive English Program provides vision, leadership, guidance and support in the design and implementation of programs and services to the English language learners. The Director leads/oversees the curriculum and curriculum reviews based on continuous assessment of students enrolled in the program and those who have matriculated into the undergraduate degree programs. The Director works closely with undergraduate faculty and department chairs in determining entry level benchmarks and standardized assessments regarding the English language proficiency and requirements of students.

Qualification:    
    At least an MA/MS and/or TESL in bilingual education linguistics, applied linguistics, English Education, and/or TESL
    Ten years of teaching experience in a US-based, college or university-level or intensive ESL for academic purposes program
    5 years of relevant administrative and management experience
    Direct experience with appropriate accreditation agencies, program and institutional accreditation
    Direct experience with curriculum assessment
    Strong, comprehensive knowledge of grammar, writing, reading, listening, speaking, pronunciation and conversation skills, strategies and methods including demonstrated excellence in teaching and ability to apply the use of instructional technology in the classroom required

Skills:
    Good computer skills for course preparation and execution, i.e. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, e-mail, CALL, WebCT, Syllabase, etc.
    Demonstratively strong classroom management, organizational and planning skills
    Native speaker fluency: good command of written and spoken English required
    Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work collaboratively in creative situations, Professional involvement (TESOL, affiliate TESOL, NAFSA, etc.) preferred

Abilities:
    Deliver clear, concise directions and explanations required
    Work flexible hours
    Work collaboratively in creative situations
    Be culturally sensitive, and interact in cross-cultural environments
    Derive personal satisfaction from and enthusiasm for teaching international students
    Empathy for the problems associated with the learning of English as a second language

Responsibilities:    
    Implementation of university policies & procedure
    Overseeing curriculum development and implementation
    Overseeing accreditation initiatives pertaining to the Intensive English Program which include developing and submitting accreditation reports as requested by the Dean of the College and in accordance to the accreditation criteria
    Running the daily operations of the Intensive English Program
    Successfully address concerns of students, teachers, and staff
    Developing and maintaining the instructional budget
    Ordering and maintaining all instructional materials
    Supervising the placement, testing, and evaluation of students
    Orienting new students to the academic program
    Developing and submitting academic and program reports as requested and/or directed by the Dean of the College
    Supervision and evaluation of IEP Instructors
    Monitor and report student progress including, but not limited to accurate and timely grading and attendance record keeping
    Attend faculty meetings, placement testing, student orientation, faculty development and in-service training and extracurricular activities as assigned
    Adhere to and support the goals and mission of the program.
